Ethiopia is located in the Northern part of the African continent and it is one of the countries in the country that has a unique landscape due to the presence of the Great Rift Valley which led to the formation of almost all the Mountains that are found in the country. The county’s landscape alone is something that you will want to explore with your entire family as you tour through Ethiopia. The different highlands and Mountains that are found in Ethiopia include:
Mount Zuqualla
Mountain Zuqualla is located in the Oromia region which is found in the Amharic Part of Ethiopia. It rises up to an elevation of 2989 meters and there are several other peaks that are located around it that you can explore when you get to the Oromia region. The Zuqualla Mountain is an extinct volcano that has a lot of things to offer and as you trek around it you will get a clear picture of the monastery that is found at the top of the Mountain, a Crater Lake and many more other things.
The Bale Mountain
The Bale Mountain also located in the Oromia zone in the Amharic region in the South Eastern Part of Ethiopia is one of the Mountains that are worth visiting when planning your trip to Ethiopia. It is 40 kilometers away from the capital city of Ethiopia Addis Ababa and it has several peaks that you can explore when you get to the Mountain and some of these peaks include:
The Mount Batu
The Mount Batu is one of the highest peaks of the Bales Mountains and it rises to about 4307 meters above sea level. The Mount Batu also has two peaks of its own which can be explored all at once and these are the Tilliq Batu and the Tinnish Batu. These two peaks give you a good view of the Bales Mountains national Park and the surrounding areas and it is considered good exercise although it is not for the faint hearted.
And besides taking a hike on the Mountain and its several peaks, you can explore the Bales Mountains National park and get to see the different animals, birds and plant species that habitate in the forests.
Mount Hay
Mount Hay is located in the North Western part of Ethiopia in the Amharic region in the Simiens National Park. The Mount Hay rises up to 4173 meters and its Parent range is the Simiens Mountain and a hike to the Mount will give you a chance to view the different animals that are located in the Simiens National Park as you admire the neighboring peaks of Ras Dashen and Mountain Simiens.
Mount Chilalo
Mount Chilalo is located in the south eastern part of Ethiopia in an isolated village. It is an extinct volcano and rises to over 4036 meters above sea level. It is locate in the Arsi province and it is the highest point in the region A trek up the mountain will provide you with a good scenery of the whole province from above and you might also sight a bird or two as you head up the Mount.
The Ras Dashen Mountain
The Ras Dashen Mountain is the highest peak and Mountain Ethiopia and in Africa it holds the position of 10th. It is also located in the Amharic region where the Simiens National Park is located and it also has a lot to offer when it comes to tourism like hiking up the Mountain, visiting the Simiens National Park and visiting the surrounding villages.
The Tullu Demtu Mountain
The Tullu Demtu Mountain is the fourth highest Mountain Ethiopia and it is located in the South eastern part of the country in the Amharic region. It is found in the Bales National Park and it is strategically located in that it divides the two Rivers of Shebelle and weyib that also pas through the Bales national Park. It rises up to about 4389 meters high above sea level and the beauty about visiting the Tullu Demtu is that you can reach the highest point of the Mountain by road. For all those that are adrenaline fans, this is the place to be as it offers a good spot for hiking and after your hike you can as well explore the Bales National Park.
The Mount Bwahit
The Mount Bwahit is part of the Simiens Mountains and it rises to a height of 4430 meters above sea level. It is the 3rd highest Mountain in Ethiopia and it can be seen in the Amharic region in the Amharic region in the Simiens National Park. A hike up the Mountain is everyone’s dream due to the beautiful scenery that you will see as you hike up the Mountain like the forest, different types of bird species and animals that habitate in the Simiens National Park.
The Simiens Mountains
The Simiens Mountains are located in the Northern and North eastern part of the country in the Amharic region. These were declared a UNESCO heritage site and they are also a home to the Simiens Mountains National Park which is a home to some of the country’s endemic animals and bird species. A hike up the Mountain will give you a chance to pass through the villages and meet the locals where you will get to know more about their culture, through the various valleys in the area and the well-marked hiked routes up the Mountain of which you will have a tour guide who will take you through the hike trails.
The Yosef Abuna Mount
The Yosef Abuna Mount rises to a height of 4260 meters above sea level and is part of the Ethiopian highlands and it is the 6th highest Mountain in Ethiopia. It is located in the Amharic region and offers tourists a good hiking experience because of the well-marked routes and the fact that you can easily drive to the Yosef unlike other Mountains in the country.
The Entoto Mountains
The Entoto Mountains rise up to a height of 3200 meters above sea level with the Mount Entoto being the highest peak. It is located just a few kilometers away from Addis Ababa and from here you get a clear view of the capital city of Ethiopia Addis Ababa and you can also explore Addis Ababa after hiking up the Entoto Mountain.
The Erta Ale Mountain
The Erta Ale Mountain is located in the Danakil Depression which is known to be the hottest place in the whole world. It is extremely hard to hike up the Erta Ale due to the presence of the Crater Lake that is found at the top of the Mountain with boiling Lava. Even though you cannot get close to it you will be able to see it from a distance and maybe trek around the base of the volcanic mountain with the help of a tour guide. And when you visit the Erta Ale, you should make sure that you pack appropriately in order to protect yourself from the fumes released from the Lave Lake and the heat.
The Amba Alagi Mountain
The Amba Alagi Mountain is located in the Northern part of Ethiopia in the Tigray region and it is elevated to a height of 3949 meters above sea level. The Mountain has both good and bad history surrounding it and that is it is located along the highway to the Maychew and this has made it a perfect place for almost all the previous battles that used to take place in Ethiopia. When you get to the highest peak, you will find a good scenery and get a better perspective of the place and Mountain.
The Mount Guna
The Mount Guna is located in the Northern part of Ethiopia in the Gondar region and it has a height of 4120 meters above sea level. It being located in the southern part of the Gondar city, it is the highest peak in the city. Many tourists trek up the Mountain and the proceeds that are got from the different hiking groups is used to develop the areas around the Mountain and note that they will not allow you to access the mountain without a licensed tour guide.
The Mount Choqa
The Mount Choqa is located in the southern part of Lake Tana and it has a height of 4100 meters above sea level. The Mountain is a home to different animals, birds and plants and not forgetting the many Rivers and springs that are located in the area. Many locals cultivate on the slopes of the Choqa mount and as you hike up the Mountain, you will be able to see the different farms and other bio diversity surrounding the Mountain. And as you head down to the Choqa Mountain, make sure that you pack appropriately because the place is too cold due to the fact that it has an altitude of about 3000 meters above sea level.
