Sibiloi National Park, Kenya

Sibiloi Kenya National park is another of Kenya’s National park that has been overlooked by the international media yet is as serene as an untouched wild paradise. The park is found in the semi desert northern Kenya region some 800km from the capital, Nairobi. Alternatively travel by road from Nairobi to Kalokol on the lake’s western shores, via Kitale and Lodwar. From Kalokol boat hire services are available across the lake to Allia Bay.

Although the area is predominantly dry, the park lies in dry sand rivers, commiphora woodlands, sandstone outcrops and with historic archaeological sites altogether making up for the 1,570sq km of the entire park . The National Park is administered under Kenya Wildlife Service and is listed on the UNESCO World heritage sites.

Sibiloi National Park goes over 1,570 square km of wild scenic scenery to the shores of Lake Turkana. This park was partially set up from the initiative of National Museums of Kenya to preserve distinctive ancient and archeological sites many of which are linked to the human evolution. The surface is lake shore, dry, semi desert bush and even close to desert region. The park happens to be dessicated except for the alkaline waters of the lake.
Main fascinations include things like the Lake Turkana views and shoreline, the origins of man at Koobi Fora Museum & Research Base, the fossils of tortoises, Behemoth and the 45ft long Crocodile and finally wild game sightings. Bird watching with more than 350 documented species consisting of flamingo, pelican and duck. Wild game found here includes Hippo, crocodile, and zebra, Grant’s gazelle, reticulated giraffe, beisa oryx, topi, greater kudu, lion, cheetah, leopard plus others. The world’s largest Nile crocodile population reproduces along Lake Turkana’s Central Island.
Using Road, the lake is often a three day drive coming from Nairobi and via Marsabit and North Horr, and also Maralal and South Horr. Alternatively travel around using road from Nairobi to Kalokol down the lake’s western shores, via Kitale and Lodwar. From Kalokol boat hire services are obtainable to ply the lake to Allia Bay. Mount Sibiloi

stands at 1,700m above sea level dominating the skies of the Kenya safari park. Other sights within the park include

Lake Turkana

on the north eastern border, being the source of life in the dry-semi arid park.

Animals within the park include hippos, crocodiles, zebras, giraffes, lion, oryx, gerenuk, leopards and other animals. More than 300 different birds are found within the park including flamingos, pelicans, ducks and other water birds.

The

Koobi Fora Museum

and Koobi Fora Spit with the facilities of the Koobi Fora research Center are to the north of Sibiloi National reserve, but are accessible through guided tours. Other attractions are the preserved wildlife fossils which include the Giant Tortoise and the 18-20 ft long Crocodile.
