Tsavo East National Park forms the larger section of the vast abundant Tsavo National Park, covers and area of 11,747sq km. The park is crossed by
Tsavo River
, fringed by vast dry savanna, meandering Galana River be, lava flows from Yatta plateau and abundant wildlife.
Game Sights
As
one of the largest Game parks in the world
, Tsavo east National Park offers splendid rewarding game view and drives in the dry savannah park. The park is home to some of the largest herds of African elephants that roam the acacia woodlands and the savanna. Other animals within the reserve include predators like lions, leopards, spotted hyena, stripped hyena, black-backed Jackal, civet, wildcat, and caracal among others.
Several species of antelopes find home within the park, among them-blue duiker, klipspringer, dik-dik, eland red duiker, impala, lesser kudu, fringe eared oryx, and many others. Other mammals within the park include buffalos, hyrax, spring hare, genet, bush baby, ground squirrel, warthog, hartebeest, zebra, mongoose, wild dog, crested porcupine, rhino and many others. Primates within the park include yellow baboons, black faced vervet and others
Several Kenya birds live in the park and some of them include ostrich, kestrels, buzzards, weaver birds, kingfishers, secretary birds, herons, crowned crane, sacred ibis, loverbird, black kite and many more
Attractions
Mudanda rock
is excellent for game viewing as it towers over
Aruba dam
in the north of
Voi River
. The water holes on the rock attract several animals after the short rains. The rock stretches to 300km on the brown shimmering
Yatta plateau
(the longest lava flow in the world).
Lugard falls
has a number of classic white water rapids on Galana River, named after the British Commissioner Fredrick Lugard. The falls form a pool that shelters some of the longest crocodiles.
Access
The park can be accessed by three main gates, from Voi through the Manyani gate, from Mombasa through the Bachuma gate or from Malindi through the Sala gate. There are also airstrips that handle light charter crafts.
