Exploring the waterfalls in Mauritius
An Island that is a gem waiting to be discovered, the Mauritius Island is a tropical Island that is located on the Indian Ocean a little farther off the East African coast. Filled with natural beauty that includes Mountains, Lakes, the Indian Ocean itself, lagoons and not forgetting the famous beaches that are scattered all over this small Island, it is a go to place for tourists who want to discover all this in one trip.
One of the natural features that will keep you on your toes while enjoying the breath taking scenery are the waterfalls that are spread all over the Island. The best time to generally visit Mauritius especially if you want to see the waterfalls is from the month of April to October. These waterfalls attract a wide range of tourists and they are considered to be some of the most beautiful and captivating waterfalls on the African continent and the whole world.

Eureka waterfalls
The Eureka waterfalls are found in the Moka ranges near the Eureka mansion and are one of the captivating waterfalls in the country. When you get to the mansion after a trek, your destination that is the waterfalls are nearby and you should prepare yourself for the breathtaking theory. Exil waterfalls
The Exil waterfalls are located in the southern part of the island near the Combo forest. The Exil waterfalls get their water from the Savanna River and the best time for you to visit the falls is when the water levels are high and this normally happens when the monsoons from the Ocean set in. Some of the activities that can be carried out while at the Exil waterfalls include swimming in the nearby ponds, abseiling and relaxing at the banks of the waterfalls. There is also a canyon that is known as the Exil Canyon and there are two minor waterfalls that are found here and these include the Cascade Cecile and the Leon waterfalls and these can also be seen and explored when you visit the Exil waterfalls.
Underwater waterfall
The underwater fall is not really a waterfall but it is a place for all those that love illusions. The underwater waterfall is an illusion that consists of sand, silt and flowing water on the Ocean bed which makes it look like a waterfall in the south western coast of the country near the Le Morne country. The only that you can be able to enjoy the underwater water fall is if you are flying over the place and there are many operators from which you can rent and book helicopter rides over the underwater waterfall.
Rochester falls
The Rochester waterfalls located in the Savanne district are part of the wonders found on the Mauritius Island that you should not miss visiting. Due to the continued flow of water on the rocks, they started changing their shape and at the moment they are rectangular in nature creating a unique pattern in which the water falls down into the abyss. They are also known to be the widest waterfalls in Mauritia and fall for about 100 meters. Trekking is one of the activities that tourists who visit the falls engage in and it is also a perfect place for one to go and enjoy a picnic with their loved ones. While here you will notice that some locals tend to jump from the top of the waterfalls to the water below but if you are not used to it, it is better if you just spectate.
Tamarind waterfalls
The Tamarind waterfalls are located in Black River district and the Black River is the source of the falls. If you are an ardent fan for adventure then this is the best place for you to be while on a trip in Mauritius. It is also considered to be one of the most entertaining waterfalls in Mauritius with its flock of bird species, the lagoon below, the canyon and the dense vegetation that surrounds the waterfall. There are various activities that you can carry out while here and these include swimming in the large pond that is found at the base of the waterfall, trekking which is done using the different trek routes that lead to the waterfall but note that while trekking, you will need to follow the tour guide as some routes are hardly passable and you can also do some birding while at the Tamarind waterfalls.
Chamarel waterfall
The waterfall is believed to have been formed millions of years ago as the rocks from which it flows to the abyss have been examined and are about 810 million years. The Chamarel waterfalls were named after the captain Chamarel who settled in the area during the colonial era and it is the highest waterfall in Mauritius. The Chamarel falls are sourced by three minor Rivers which join forming the 100 meter long waterfall. There are also various activities that you can engage in while at the Chamarel waterfall and some of these include hiking around the falls, exploring the Black River Gorges National Park in which the falls are located and also get to visit the seven colored earths.
Alexandra waterfalls
The Alexandra waterfalls are located within the Black River gorges National Park and fall for about 700 meters above sea level and the best way for one to get to the falls is by using the Plaine champagne route that is found in the national park. It is surrounded by a work of art that is provided by the dense vegetation that is practically endemic to the Island and when you get to the top of the falls, the beautiful scenery of the water dropping down into the forest below is one that you will not want to miss out on.
Ground River south East waterfall
This is one of the most visited waterfalls in Mauritius and the best way for you to get a close look is by taking a boat trip. The boat trip towards the falls is an exciting one as you get to see many of the coastal villages located at the banks, the vegetation up close, a few aqua animals before reaching the falls that will blow your mind away. You will however need to book the boat trip early enough so that you get the best experience out of all this. The activities that are mostly carried out here include the catamaran cruising and boat ride and you will also notice a quick change of color from turquoise to green in the water as you get closer to the waterfalls.
