Harar the walled city, guide Solomon was magnificent
Harar is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a history stretching back to the seventh century. Guide Solomon had grown up in the town and knew every building, every family name, every coffee ceremony protocol. We spent two full days inside the Jugol, the old walled city, and on the second day Solomon arranged a morning coffee ceremony with an elderly woman who still processed the coffee on a clay roasting pan over wood coals in the method described by sixteenth-century travellers. The hyena feeding that evening was the famous tourist experience but the two days inside the walls were the genuine Harar.
Ethiopia in three weeks, north to south is the right direction
Vowland Ethiopia Tour designed a three-week Ethiopia itinerary that moved from the ancient north to the tribal south. Finishing in the Omo Valley after the heritage circuit meant ending with the most physically and emotionally challenging part of the trip when we were most adjusted to Ethiopia and able to take it in correctly. Guide Samuel had spent years working in both regions and understood that the combination required a particular kind of mental adjustment. He gave us a full debrief on the Omo Valley culture three days before we arrived to prepare the frame of reference.
Ethiopia fourteen days, the country changed how I think about Africa
I had visited eleven African countries before Ethiopia and I had a framework that Ethiopia challenged at every point. Vowland Ethiopia Tour designed a fourteen-day circuit that moved from the ancient Christian monuments of the north to the tribal communities of the Omo Valley in the south, a distance of over a thousand kilometres through a landscape that changes from highland plateau to Rift Valley to semi-arid lowland. Lalibela and the Simien Mountains, the two essential Ethiopia experiences
Vowland Ethiopia Tour combined Lalibela with the Simien Mountains in a single eight-day trip that I initially thought was too compressed. It was not. Guide Samuel moved between the two very different environments with complete authority. The Lalibela churches occupied two full days including an evening visit to Bet Medhane Alem, the largest rock-hewn church in the world, when the priests were chanting for the evening service and the stone interior amplified the sound. The Simien Mountains segment started the following morning and the gelada baboons on the Imet Gogo plateau greeted us at the edge of the escarpment on the first day.
Ethiopia for the Ethiopian wolf, Bale Mountains delivered
I had specifically researched the Ethiopian wolf for two years before booking. Vowland Ethiopia Tour arranged the Bale Mountains at the correct time of year when the rodent prey on the Sanetti Plateau is at peak density. Guide Samuel had contacts with the Ethiopian Wolf Conservation Programme and arranged a morning with one of their field researchers who was tracking the Tarura pack. We observed four animals over three hours including a successful mouse hunt and a territorial marking sequence. There are fewer than five hundred Ethiopian wolves left in the world and seeing them in the Bale Mountains with that level of guided access was something I have not been able to adequately describe to anyone since returning.
Simien Mountains trek, five days through dramatic highland landscape
Vowland Ethiopia Tour arranged the five-day Simien Mountains trek with camping at Imet Gogo, Chenek, and Ambiko. Guide Samuel and the two scouts who accompanied us for the mandatory armed escort requirement navigated the route at a pace suited to the altitude, which begins at 2800 metres and rises to over 4000 metres at Ras Dashen. The gelada baboon herds were present in large numbers throughout the trek, with a group of over three hundred individuals grazing on the cliff edges near Imet Gogo. The walia ibex at Chenek were visible from the camp and came close enough to the tents on the second morning that we watched them from inside the tent door.
Lalibela twice, the second time with Vowland was different
I had visited Lalibela once independently and returned with Vowland Ethiopia Tour specifically because I had not understood what I was seeing on the first visit. Guide Samuel was formally educated in Ge’ez, the liturgical language of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church, and he read the dedicatory inscriptions on the doorframes of Bet Golgotha and Bet Mikael on the second morning. The physical context of the churches, cut downward into the red volcanic tuff so that the rooftops are at ground level, was something I had never properly grasped from above-ground photography.
Simien Mountains five-day trek, not a single complaint
