Wild Whispers Africa for a honeymoon safari, absolutely the right choice
We chose Wild Whispers Africa for our honeymoon and the company built a Rwanda and Uganda itinerary that balanced the physical demands of gorilla trekking with two quieter days at Lake Kivu and two days at Lake Bunyonyi. Guide James provided a private vehicle for the full trip and the accommodation was selected at the romantic end of the scale at every location. The gorilla trek in Volcanoes National Park on day five was the centrepiece and James had secured the Umubano group permit, a small, calm family with exceptional silverbacks. The canopy room at the Virunga Lodge overlooking the lake was perfect.

Rwanda Nyungwe and Volcanoes, Wild Whispers uses the whole country
Wild Whispers Africa builds Rwanda itineraries that use the full ecological range of the country rather than treating it as a single-destination gorilla trekking trip. The Nyungwe Forest opening at Gisakura gave two days of Afromontane forest with colobus monkeys, the canopy walkway, and a chimpanzee tracking attempt in the Cyamudongo annex. Guide James then drove the central plateau through Kigali to Ruhengeri for the Volcanoes segment. That transition from forest to volcanic highland in one day covered more of Rwanda than most visitors experience in a week.

Gorilla trekking permit for the Hirwa group, small and calm
Wild Whispers Africa secured the Hirwa group permit in Volcanoes National Park. The Hirwa group is the smallest of the habituated Virunga families with approximately sixteen members and guide James explained that smaller groups tend to have calmer encounters because the silverback has fewer social dynamics to manage during the visitor hour. The trek was two hours to the base of Mount Sabyinyo through dense vegetation and the Hirwa group was found feeding at the forest edge in good morning light. Three juveniles were playing within the group and one climbed a tree above our position during the full observation hour.

The logistics of moving between Uganda and Rwanda for primate trekking are more complicated than they appear on a map. Wild Whispers Africa managed the cross-border transfer, the permit change, and the camp change between Bwindi and Kinigi in a single day without any loss of service quality. Guide James crossed with us and the continuity of guide throughout the eleven days was the single most valuable element of the trip. Having the same person build the naturalist context from Kibale through Bwindi and into the Virunga created an intellectual coherence that made each location richer.
Rwanda Volcanoes, the Isabukuru male group, unexpected behaviour

What we had not anticipated was witnessing an extended dominance display between two silverbacks during our observation hour. The display involved chest beating, vegetation tearing, and a parallel charge between the two males that ended with both animals sitting three metres apart in a mutual assessment posture. James explained the specific body signals and what they indicated about the state of the competition. That kind of real-time interpretation changes what you see.
Rwanda gorilla trekking as a seventieth birthday gift, perfectly managed
My family booked Wild Whispers Africa for a gorilla trekking trip as a seventieth birthday present. I had told them the trip was impractical at my age and I was wrong. Guide James assessed my fitness level honestly in a pre-trip phone call and recommended the Sabyinyo family permit, which requires the shortest trek of any Virunga group because the family inhabits lower ground. The trek was two hours and physically well within my capacity. The silverback came within six metres of our group and the hour with the family was the most affecting wildlife experience of my life at any age.
Uganda Bwindi, three nights for two gorilla treks was the right decision

Ich hatte den zweiten Trekkingpermit urspruenglich als redundant abgelehnt und wurde eines Besseren belehrt. Die erste Gruppe, die Mucunguzi-Familie, wurde in einer Waldschlucht gefunden mit wenig Licht und dichter Vegetation. Die zweite Gruppe, die Kahungye-Familie, war auf einem offenen Hangbereich in der Mittagssonne. Die beiden Erfahrungen waren physisch und visuell derart verschieden, dass der zweite Trekkingpermit seinen Wert vollstaendig bewies.
