Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Arrival in Bujumbura – Rusizi National Park and Lake Tanganyika

On arrival at Bujumbura International Airport, you’ll be welcomed by your local guide and transferred to your hotel for check-in.

After a short rest, begin your Burundi safari with a visit to Rusizi National Park, just 15 minutes from Bujumbura. This wetland reserve lies along the Rusizi River and is home to hippos, sitatungas, crocodiles, and over 200 species of birds. Enjoy a guided game drive and a short walk along the riverbanks for up-close wildlife viewing.

In the afternoon, return to Bujumbura for a relaxing visit to Lake Tanganyika, one of the world’s oldest and deepest lakes. Spend time at the beach or take a boat ride along the coast. Watch the sunset over the water before returning to your hotel.

Dinner and overnight in Bujumbura.

2

Cultural Tour – Gishora Drum Sanctuary and Local Village Life

After breakfast, head east towards Gitega, the cultural capital of Burundi. Your main destination today is the Gishora Drum Sanctuary, one of the most important heritage sites in the country. Here, you’ll witness the performance of the royal drummers of Burundi, a UNESCO-recognized tradition that blends rhythm, dance, and storytelling.

Continue with a visit to Gitega National Museum, which displays traditional artifacts, royal regalia, and items from pre-colonial Burundi. You may also stop in nearby rural communities for a glimpse of Burundian village life, including local farming, crafts, and markets.

Return to Bujumbura in the evening for dinner and overnight.

3

Kiganda Trail and Departure

Start your final day with a half-day excursion to Kiganda, one of Burundi’s historical hilltop settlements. This is the site where the 1903 treaty between the Burundian kingdom and German colonizers was signed. The area offers scenic views and an opportunity to learn about Burundi’s early political history.

Depending on your flight schedule, enjoy some leisure time at Sagate Beach or visit Central Market in Bujumbura for local fabrics, spices, and handmade crafts.

You will be transferred to Bujumbura International Airport, marking the end of your 3-day Burundi safari, a short but enriching mix of wildlife, history, and culture.
