This short but immersive tour of Eritrea focuses on the capital city of Asmara and its surroundings. You’ll explore Italian-era architecture, vibrant markets, religious landmarks, and a scenic drive through highland villages toward the edge of the eastern escarpment.

Day 1: Arrival in Asmara – Architecture, Culture, and Historic Sites

Arrive at Asmara International Airport, meet your local guide, and transfer to your hotel in the heart of the city.
Start your day with a walking tour of central Asmara, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its Italian modernist architecture. Visit iconic buildings such as the Fiat Tagliero service station, the Cathedral of Asmara, and the Cinema Impero.

Later, explore the Asmara Market, including the spice section, silver shops, and the Medebar Market, where artisans repurpose scrap metal into household goods.

Day 2: Excursion to Keren or Massawa (Choose One)

Option 1 – Keren Highland Town Excursion:
After breakfast, drive north to Keren (about 90 km), a picturesque highland town surrounded by hills. Visit the Camel Market, Mariam Dearit shrine, and the British War Cemetery. Stroll through Keren’s old quarters and learn about its blend of Tigre, Bilen, and Saho cultures.

Option 2 – Day Trip to Massawa (Longer Drive):
Alternatively, take a scenic drive down the eastern escarpment to Massawa, descending from 2,300m to sea level. Explore the Ottoman-style architecture, coral buildings, and Red Sea coast. Visit Massawa port, the Imperial Palace ruins, and walk through the old town before returning to Asmara in the evening.

Before departure, stop at the National Museum of Eritrea or enjoy a final stroll along Harnet Avenue.
