Day 1: Arrival in Libreville – Flight to Gamba – Transfer to Moukalaba-Doudou National Park

Your gorilla trekking safari begins with your arrival in Libreville, the capital of Gabon. Upon landing at Libreville International Airport, a representative will greet you and assist with your connection to a domestic flight to Gamba or Lambaréné, depending on available flight schedules and conditions.

Upon landing in Gamba, you will meet your local guide and driver for a 4×4 transfer to Moukalaba-Doudou National Park, located in the Nyanga Province. The park covers an estimated 4,500 square kilometers and is one of the best regions in Gabon for gorilla tracking due to its relatively open terrain and high primate density.

The journey from Gamba to the park entrance can take between 2 to 4 hours, depending on road conditions. You’ll pass through rural villages and scenic patches of rainforest, with potential wildlife sightings en route.

Arrival at your eco-camp near Doussala or Tchibanga in the late afternoon. Settle in, enjoy a fresh local dinner, and attend a briefing on the gorilla trekking rules, safety measures, and conservation work being done in the park by local trackers and researchers. Overnight at a forest camp or lodge with basic but comfortable facilities.

Day 2: Gorilla Trekking in Moukalaba-Doudou – Forest and Wildlife Exploration

After an early breakfast, set out for your gorilla trek with an experienced guide and a team of trackers. Western lowland gorillas are the key attraction here, and the trek can last anywhere from 2 to 5 hours depending on the location of the habituated groups.

Gorilla tracking in this region offers a raw and intimate wildlife experience. While hiking through the forest, you’ll also encounter other species such as putty-nosed monkeys, red-capped mangabeys, duikers, and a wide range of birdlife. Moukalaba-Doudou is one of the few places in Central Africa with good visibility for gorilla tracking, especially during the dry season (May to September).

Once the gorilla family is found, visitors are allowed to stay with them for up to one hour, observing their natural behavior while keeping a respectful distance of 7 meters. Photography is allowed, but without flash.

Return to the lodge for a late lunch and rest. In the afternoon, you may choose to take a guided walk to explore nearby trails, observe bird species, or learn about medicinal plants and local forest traditions from the guides.

Dinner and overnight at your forest lodge or camp.

Day 3: Return Transfer to Gamba – Flight Back to Libreville

Wake up early and enjoy a forest breakfast before checking out of camp. Depart by road back to Gamba for your return flight to Libreville. Depending on your flight schedule and time availability, you may stop en route at a village for a short cultural interaction or craft market visit.

Upon arrival in Libreville, you’ll be assisted with your international departure or transferred to a hotel for your onward travel.
