Mauritania short tour package | Chinguetti and Ouadane tour | Sahara desert and caravan towns
Arrive at Atar International Airport, where you’ll be welcomed by your guide and begin your journey into the Adrar region. After a short orientation and supply check, set off on a 3–4 hour drive across dramatic desert landscapes and rocky plateaus toward Chinguetti, one of Mauritania’s oldest and most symbolic towns.
Along the way, stop at the Amogjar Pass for panoramic views of the Sahara and a chance to see ancient rock paintings near Agrour. Reach Chinguetti in the late afternoon and check in to a traditional guesthouse built from dry stone and earth.
In the evening, take a short walk through the narrow alleys of the old ksar (fortified town). Visit the Friday Mosque of Chinguetti (outside only) and get introduced to the layout of this UNESCO-listed site.

After breakfast, begin a guided exploration of Chinguetti’s historic center. Learn about the town’s role as a major center of Islamic scholarship and a rest stop on the trans-Saharan trade routes.
Later in the morning, drive 90 km southeast through sand dunes and rocky outcrops to the remote town of Ouadane. Founded in the 12th century, Ouadane sits dramatically on a ridge above the desert. Visit the ruins of the old town, its collapsed towers and abandoned homes telling stories of ancient trade and decline. Optional walk down to the dry wadi for more photo opportunities.
