Day-by-Day Itinerary

1

Arrival in Cotonou – City Tour and Art Scene

Arrive at Cotonou International Airport, where your guide will meet and transfer you to your hotel. After check-in and rest, begin your introduction to Benin with a half-day city tour of Cotonou. Visit the Cotonou Cathedral, Place des Martyrs, and the Artisanal Center, known for wood carvings, beadwork, and bronze sculptures.

Later, visit Dantokpa Market, one of West Africa’s largest open-air markets, where you’ll find fabrics, herbal stalls, and everything from food to metalwork. In the evening, relax along Boulevard Marina or enjoy grilled tilapia at a local beach restaurant.

Overnight in Cotonou.

2

Ouidah – Slave Route, Voodoo Temples, and Beachside Rest

After breakfast, travel west to Ouidah, a coastal town that was one of the major slave trading ports in West Africa. Begin with a visit to the Ouidah Museum of History, set in a former Portuguese fort, which offers insight into colonial influence and slave export routes.

Walk the Slave Route, a 4-kilometer trail lined with historic monuments, ending at the Door of No Return, a symbolic memorial on the beach. In the afternoon, explore voodoo heritage at the Temple of the Sacred Python and local fetishes, learning from a voodoo priest about the spiritual worldview still practiced today.

Spend the evening relaxing by the Atlantic Ocean. Overnight in Ouidah.

3

Ganvié – Floating Village on Lake Nokoué

After breakfast, return to the Cotonou area and drive north to Ganvié, one of Africa’s largest stilt villages, home to over 20,000 Tofinu people. Board a wooden canoe for a guided tour through canals between houses, markets, and schools, all floating on water. Hear stories of how the village was founded in the 17th century as protection against slave raiders.

Return to Cotonou in the afternoon and enjoy leisure time at your hotel or visit an art gallery to learn about Beninese contemporary creativity. Dinner and overnight in Cotonou.

4

Abomey – Kingdom of Dahomey and UNESCO Royal Palaces

Depart after breakfast for Abomey, former capital of the Dahomey Kingdom and home to the Royal Palaces, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. These historical clay palaces contain bas-reliefs and shrines honoring kings like Ghezo and Béhanzin. Visit the Historical Museum, which showcases weapons, throne rooms, and the legacy of the Dahomey Amazons, the famed female warriors.

Also visit the Appliqué workshops, where artists create symbolic cloth wall hangings depicting scenes from Dahomean history. Depending on time, visit a traditional healer or voodoo community on the outskirts.

Overnight in Abomey.

5

Return to Cotonou – Local Experiences and Departure

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Cotonou. En route, stop in small villages known for pottery, blacksmithing, or weaving, offering insight into traditional craftsmanship still thriving in Benin.

Back in Cotonou, enjoy a final lunch of local dishes like pounded yam with peanut sauce or akassa with fried fish. Depending on your flight time, visit the beach or relax at your hotel before your transfer to Cotonou International Airport, concluding your 5-day Benin tour.
