Discover Madagascar’s Rich Wildlife and Rainforest Trails in 5 Days – Lemurs, Reptiles, and Cultural Landscapes
Madagascar Safari Tours | Lemur Tracking | Andasibe National Park Holidays | Madagascar Wildlife Safari
Upon arrival at Ivato International Airport in Antananarivo, you will be welcomed by your guide and transferred east toward Andasibe-Mantadia National Park. The scenic 3.5-hour drive winds through the Malagasy Highlands, past terraced farms and rural towns.
Arrive in Andasibe by late afternoon and check in at your forest lodge. After dark, take a guided night walk along the park’s edge, looking for mouse lemurs, chameleons, and tree frogs.
Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge or Andasibe Hotel.
Begin the morning with a guided walk in Andasibe National Park, home to the Indri indri – Madagascar’s largest lemur species. With luck, you’ll hear their deep, wailing calls echoing through the rainforest canopy. Other possible sightings include diademed sifakas, bamboo lemurs, and a variety of endemic birds.
Return to the lodge for lunch, then visit the nearby Vakona Private Reserve, where you’ll explore Lemur Island and observe lemurs in semi-captive conditions. Some species may jump close during the visit, offering good photo opportunities.
Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge or similar.
After breakfast, take a full-day excursion to Mantadia National Park, a wilder and less-traveled section of the rainforest. The drive takes about an hour on a rough forest road. Explore rich forest trails in search of black-and-white ruffed lemurs, red-bellied lemurs, and endemic plant species including orchids and carnivorous pitcher plants.
Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park and continue your exploration to waterfalls and sacred forest sites important to local communities.
Return to your lodge by late afternoon.
Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge or similar.
After breakfast, head to the Analamazaotra Reserve, a protected area within Andasibe known for its high concentration of Indri families. This guided morning walk offers more opportunities to track different lemur groups and spot unique bird species such as the Madagascar paradise flycatcher and ground rollers.
After lunch, spend your afternoon at leisure or visit a nearby reptile park, where chameleons, geckos, snakes, and frogs can be seen up close in controlled conditions.
Overnight at Vakona Forest Lodge or similar.
After a relaxed breakfast, begin the return journey to Antananarivo. On the way, stop at Peyrieras Reptile Reserve to see a collection of local chameleons, butterflies, and amphibians.
Depending on time, you may visit Ambohimanga Hill, a former royal site and UNESCO World Heritage location. The tour ends with a drop-off at your hotel in Antananarivo or at the airport for your flight.
