5 Days Tunisia Tour – History, Desert, Culture & Coastline

Arrive at Tunis–Carthage International Airport, where your local guide will meet you. Begin with a short transfer to the ancient city of Carthage, once the center of the Carthaginian Empire. Explore sites such as the Antonine Baths, Tophet Sanctuary, and Roman Villas, offering views of Tunisia’s layered past.

Afterwards, visit Sidi Bou Said, the charming hilltop village overlooking the Mediterranean. Walk through its narrow streets lined with white buildings and blue doors, browse local art shops, and enjoy tea at a seaside café.

Later, transfer to your hotel in Tunis city center. If time permits, visit the Bardo National Museum, known for its exceptional Roman mosaics.

After breakfast, explore the Medina of Tunis, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit historic mosques, old souks, and traditional craft shops in this maze of alleyways that reflect Tunisia’s Arab-Andalusian heritage.

Mid-morning, travel to Kairouan, considered the fourth holiest city in Islam. Visit the Great Mosque of Kairouan, one of the oldest and most impressive in North Africa, the Aghlabid water basins, and the Barber’s Mausoleum. The medina is also famous for its handmade carpets and sweet pastries.

Enjoy lunch in the city and spend the afternoon exploring the traditional markets. In the evening, check in at your hotel in Kairouan.

After breakfast, drive to El Djem, home to a remarkably preserved Roman amphitheater that once held up to 35,000 spectators. Walk through its towering arches and subterranean chambers, imagining the roar of crowds from two millennia ago.

Continue south to the mountain village of Matmata, where traditional troglodyte homes are carved into the earth. Visit a local Berber house and learn about the region’s unique architecture and way of life.

Optional visit to the filming location of Star Wars in the nearby village of Sidi Driss. Enjoy a local lunch in Matmata, then continue to Douz, the gateway to the Sahara.

Start the morning with an optional camel ride through the dunes of Douz, where you’ll experience the silence and scale of the Sahara Desert.

After breakfast, depart for Chott El Jerid, Tunisia’s largest salt lake. Depending on the season, the lake shimmers with mirages or forms colorful salt crusts that stretch to the horizon.

Continue your journey north through Gafsa and return to the coastal region. Depending on the itinerary, enjoy a short visit to Tozeur's palm groves or Sbeitla’s Roman ruins before heading to the seaside town of Sousse or Hammamet.

Enjoy a relaxed morning exploring the Medina of Sousse, another UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Ribat Fortress, Great Mosque, and the Archaeological Museum, which houses an excellent collection of Roman mosaics.

Stroll through the local souks, pick up souvenirs, or relax by the beach before returning to Tunis for your departure. Depending on your flight time, a stop can be arranged at Hammamet for a coastal lunch or walk through the Old Town.
