Arrival in Djibouti City – Culture and Orientation

Arrive at Djibouti–Ambouli International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Djibouti City.

Begin with an orientation tour of the capital, including Place Menelik, Hamoudi Mosque, and the colorful main market, filled with spices, traditional fabrics, and artisan goods. Walk along the waterfront to see views of the Gulf of Tadjoura and the Port of Djibouti.

Day Trip to Lake Assal and Ardoukoba Volcano

After breakfast, head west to Lake Assal, the lowest point in Africa at 155 meters below sea level. The lake’s saline waters and blinding white salt pans offer striking photo opportunities. Observe local salt miners and Afar traders.

En route, stop at Goubet al-Kharab, also called the Devil’s Cauldron, and hike the Ardoukoba Volcano trail, where lava fields stretch between the Red Sea and the lake.

Return to Djibouti City in the evening.

Ferry to Tadjoura – Old Town and Gulf Coast

Take a morning ferry across the Gulf of Tadjoura to Tadjoura, Djibouti’s oldest town and former sultanate. Explore the old mosque, the ruins of the Sultan’s Palace, and walk through quiet streets lined with whitewashed houses.

Relax on the beach or enjoy swimming in the calm bay. Lunch will be served at a local seafront restaurant. Optional snorkeling equipment available.

Marine Reserve – Snorkeling and Whale Shark Encounter (Seasonal)

Depart by boat for an excursion along the coastline near Arta or Ras Korali, where whale sharks are often seen between November and February. Snorkel over coral reefs with chances to see reef fish, rays, and turtles.

Enjoy a picnic lunch on a beach, followed by more snorkeling or swimming. Return to Tadjoura by evening.
