7 Days Burundi Safari – Wildlife, Forests, Culture and Hidden Natural Wonders

Upon arrival at Bujumbura International Airport, you will be received by your guide and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon, begin your safari with a visit to Rusizi National Park, located just outside the city. Drive along the Rusizi River, home to hippos, crocodiles, sitatungas, and a large number of birds. This park provides an excellent introduction to Burundi’s wetland wildlife.

Later, visit the shores of Lake Tanganyika, where you can relax at the beach or enjoy a short boat ride on one of the world’s deepest freshwater lakes. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight in Bujumbura.

After breakfast, travel north to Kibira National Park, located along the Congo-Nile Divide. This mountainous rainforest is rich in biodiversity and supports populations of chimpanzees, colobus monkeys, and over 200 species of birds.

Take a guided nature walk with a park ranger through forest trails that wind through bamboo groves and tree ferns. There is also a panoramic viewpoint offering views over the forest canopy and adjacent tea plantations.

Enjoy a picnic lunch or eat at a nearby eco-lodge before returning to Bujumbura for overnight.

Depart Bujumbura after breakfast and drive east to Gitega, Burundi’s cultural and administrative capital. Visit the Gitega National Museum, where you’ll find collections of traditional tools, ceremonial items, musical instruments, and royal regalia from Burundi’s pre-colonial kingdoms.

In the afternoon, visit the Gishora Drum Sanctuary, where you will witness a performance by the royal drummers of Burundi. The drumming is accompanied by dance and chants and is a symbol of the country’s cultural identity.

Overnight in Gitega.

After breakfast, set out on a scenic drive to Karera Waterfalls in Rutana Province. These multi-tiered falls are surrounded by lush greenery and provide an excellent backdrop for photography and short hikes.

Continue onward to the Southern Source of the Nile, marked by a monument near Rutovu. This site, located at high altitude, is one of the sources of the Nile River and has cultural and geographical significance in East Africa.

Return to Gitega in the evening for dinner and overnight.

Check out after breakfast and head north toward Ruvubu National Park, the largest national park in Burundi. The park is made up of rolling savannah, acacia woodland, and riverine forests along the Ruvubu River.

Spend the day exploring this remote park on a guided game drive, where you may encounter buffalo, bushbuck, duikers, vervet monkeys, and dozens of bird species. The park is also home to hippos and crocodiles, especially along the riverbanks.

Overnight at a basic lodge or guesthouse near the park.

After breakfast, begin the return journey to Bujumbura. Along the way, stop in villages to observe local crafts, traditional farming, and community markets. You may also visit Kiganda, a historical site where early colonial agreements were signed between German agents and Burundian kings.

Arrive in Bujumbura in the late afternoon. Check in to your hotel and enjoy a relaxed dinner.

Spend your final morning at leisure. You can enjoy a relaxed breakfast followed by a stroll along the shores of Lake Tanganyika, or visit the Central Market for last-minute shopping.
