Day 1: Arrival in Lilongwe – Transfer to Liwonde National Park (Approx. 5 hrs)

Land at Lilongwe International Airport where your safari guide will meet and brief you. Set off on a scenic drive to Liwonde National Park, located along the Shire River. This park is well-known for its revitalized wildlife populations and biodiversity, with frequent sightings of elephants, hippos, crocodiles, antelopes, and over 400 bird species.

Arrive at Mvuu Camp or a similar lodge and settle in. In the afternoon, enjoy a game drive through the floodplains and woodlands.

Dinner and overnight at your lodge in Liwonde.

Day 2: Safari Activities in Liwonde – Game Drive & Boat Safari

After breakfast, embark on a morning game drive through the park’s open plains and riverine forests. Expect sightings of elephants, buffalo, sable antelopes, and the occasional lion or cheetah. The rewilding efforts by African Parks have restored Liwonde into a stronghold for many species.

After lunch, enjoy a Shire River boat safari, ideal for observing crocodiles, hippos, and birdlife such as fish eagles, herons, and kingfishers.

Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 3: Transfer to Majete Wildlife Reserve (Approx. 4 hrs)

Check out after breakfast and transfer to Majete Wildlife Reserve, located in the Lower Shire Valley. This Big Five reserve is one of Malawi’s top conservation areas, covering 700 km² and home to elephants, rhinos, lions, leopards, buffalo, and more.

Arrive at Thawale Lodge or a similar property for lunch. In the late afternoon, go for a game drive to explore the park’s rivers, hills, and woodland tracks.

Dinner and overnight inside Majete Reserve.

Day 4: Full Day in Majete – Game Drives and Walking Safari

Enjoy a morning game drive to explore new sections of the park. Keep watch for giraffes, elands, kudu, waterbucks, warthogs, and various predators.

Return for lunch and later take a guided walking safari, a great way to learn about tracks, birds, and smaller species while walking safely with an armed scout.

Optional: Visit a nearby local village for cultural interaction.

Dinner and overnight at your lodge in Majete.

Day 5: Transfer to Lake Malawi – Monkey Bay or Cape Maclear (Approx. 3–4 hrs)

Depart after breakfast and drive east to the southern shores of Lake Malawi, arriving in the Monkey Bay or Cape Maclear area. Lake Malawi is a UNESCO-listed freshwater lake known for its clear waters, sandy beaches, and endemic cichlid fish.

Check in at a lakeside lodge such as The Makokola Retreat, Pumulani Lodge, or a similar beachfront property. Spend the afternoon relaxing, swimming, or kayaking.

Dinner and overnight by Lake Malawi.

Day 6: Leisure at Lake Malawi – Snorkeling, Kayaking, or Village Visit

Spend a full day by the lake with optional activities:

  • Snorkeling or glass-bottom boat rides to explore underwater life
