Arrive at Cotonou International Airport, where your local guide will meet and assist with hotel transfer. After settling in, begin your tour with an orientation drive through Cotonou’s key landmarks. Visit the Artisanal Center for crafts and carvings, and walk through Dantokpa Market, the largest in Benin. Later, explore the Boulevard Marina, the seaside stretch lined with monuments, cafés, and public art installations.

After breakfast, head west to Ouidah, one of West Africa’s most historically significant towns. Begin with a guided tour of the Ouidah Museum of History, housed in a former Portuguese fort, and learn about the transatlantic slave trade.

Walk the Slave Route leading to the Door of No Return, a symbolic monument on the beach. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Python, an active site of traditional worship, and learn about voodoo beliefs from a local priest. End the day relaxing at a beachfront hotel.

Overnight in Ouidah.

Depart Ouidah and travel to Ganvié, a floating village built on Lake Nokoué. Board a wooden canoe for a guided tour through canals between houses, markets, and schools raised on stilts. This community, created in the 17th century to avoid slave raiders, remains one of the most unique settlements in Africa.

Return to Cotonou in the afternoon for dinner and overnight stay.

After breakfast, depart for Abomey, the former capital of the Dahomey Kingdom. Visit the Royal Palaces, recognized by UNESCO for their historical and architectural value. Learn about the military traditions, monarchy structure, and the legendary Dahomey Amazons, the all-female elite warriors.

Explore the Museum of Abomey, with its royal artifacts, thrones, weapons, and ceremonial objects. Later, stop at local workshops where artisans produce symbolic appliqué banners used in royal ceremonies. Overnight in Abomey.

Begin a long scenic drive north to Natitingou, a town at the base of the Atakora Mountains. Pass through villages and savannah landscapes, with opportunities to stop for photos or roadside snacks like grilled plantains and groundnuts.

Arrive in the evening and check into a lodge. Relax before the next day’s cultural exploration. Dinner and overnight in Natitingou.

After breakfast, set out to visit the Somba people and their famous Tata Somba houses. These fortified clay homes with flat rooftops resemble miniature castles and serve as both living quarters and protection from past raids. A local guide will explain the building process, spiritual beliefs, and agricultural life of the Somba community.

You’ll also visit local markets or nearby farms to learn about millet, yam, and shea butter production. Return to Natitingou for overnight.

Travel to the Taneka hills, where various ethnic groups, including the Taneka people, live in clustered stone homes with round thatched roofs. The area is known for its initiates and traditional healers.

You’ll meet a community elder or spiritual leader who will share insight into initiation rituals, medicinal plant use, and the role of tradition in daily life. After your visit, return south toward Dassa or Abomey for overnight.

After breakfast, drive back to Cotonou, stopping at craft villages or roadside attractions on the way. Enjoy your final meal of local dishes such as akassa, pounded yam with goat stew, or fried fish with attiéké.

Depending on your flight time, you may visit one last gallery or beach café before transfer to Cotonou International Airport, marking the end of your 8-day Benin tour.
