Day 1: Arrival in Libreville – City Sights and Cultural Orientation

Upon arrival at Libreville International Airport, meet your local guide and transfer to your hotel. After check-in, begin your introduction to Gabon with a short city tour. Visit the National Museum of Arts and Traditions, showcasing Fang masks, tribal artifacts, and musical instruments. Stop at St. Michael Cathedral, the palm-lined seaside promenade, and the artisan market where you can browse local woodwork, fabrics, and jewelry.

Dinner at a city restaurant serving dishes like cassava with nyembwe (palm nut sauce) and grilled fish. Overnight at a mid-range or boutique hotel in Libreville.

Day 2: Libreville to Lambaréné – Lakeside Villages and Albert Schweitzer Hospital

After breakfast, set off on a 5-hour drive through rainforests and riverside settlements to reach Lambaréné, situated on the Ogooué River. This region blends colonial heritage with natural beauty.

On arrival, visit the historic Albert Schweitzer Hospital, founded in 1913. The museum gives insight into Dr. Schweitzer’s life and his medical mission in equatorial Africa. In the afternoon, take a dugout canoe trip or motorboat ride through the Zilé Lakes, visiting local stilt villages and spotting birds like hornbills, kingfishers, and herons.

Dinner and overnight at a lakeside guesthouse or lodge.

Day 3: Drive to Loango National Park – Gateway to Gabon’s Biodiversity

After breakfast, journey toward the coast and into Gabon’s most iconic wilderness – Loango National Park. The route includes a combination of road transfer and boat ride depending on season and accessibility.

Arrive at a lodge or eco-camp near the Iguéla Lagoon or Akaka River. Loango’s landscape features forests, wetlands, beaches, and open savannah, making it a hotspot for large mammals, birds, and reptiles. Spend your afternoon relaxing, or enjoy a short guided walk to spot monkeys, butterflies, and birds near the lodge.

Dinner and overnight at Loango Lodge, Akaka Camp, or similar.

Day 4: Wildlife Safaris in Loango – Forest & Lagoon Exploration

Today, embark on a full day of wildlife exploration. Head out with your guide by 4×4 or boat depending on weather and animal movement. Potential wildlife sightings include:

  • Forest elephants and red river hogs
  • African forest buffalo
  • Western lowland gorillas (optional permit-based tracking)
  • Crocodiles, hippos, and waterbirds along the lagoon

Enjoy a picnic lunch inside the park or return to camp for a break. In the afternoon, continue with a boat cruise across the estuary, ideal for sunset photography and birdwatching. Keep an eye out for palm-nut vultures, African fish eagles, and bee-eaters.

Evening at leisure. Overnight at your lodge in Loango.

Day 5: Gorilla Tracking or Beach Drive – Search for Surfside Wildlife

Depending on availability and interest, begin your morning with a gorilla tracking experience. A team of trained trackers will guide you to a habituated group of western lowland gorillas in the forest. Observation time is limited to one hour to minimize disturbance.

Alternatively, enjoy a beachside game drive, Loango is one of the few places in Africa where elephants and buffaloes are sometimes seen near the surf, particularly between October and April. You may also visit nearby research bases to learn about conservation projects.

Return for lunch and rest. Optional guided walk or canoe ride in the evening. Dinner and overnight in Loango.

Day 6: Transfer to Gamba – Birdwatching and Wetland Ecology

After breakfast, leave Loango and head south toward Gamba, a town nestled between the Ndogo Lagoon and the Atlantic. The transfer involves both boat and road sections.

Gamba is a base for nature exploration and a region rich in birdlife. Visit Sette Cama, a Ramsar-listed wetland area with over 500 species of birds. Look for African jacanas, herons, wattled lapwings, and bee-eaters.

Visit local community projects or fishing villages to learn about the human-nature balance in this coastal region. Overnight in a simple eco-lodge or guesthouse in Gamba.

Day 7: Return to Libreville – Flight or Long Road Transfer

Start your journey back to Libreville. Depending on the day’s domestic flight schedules, you’ll either return by plane or undertake a full-day road journey north.

If flying, enjoy a short morning excursion before heading to Gamba airstrip. Upon arrival in Libreville, you will be met and transferred to your hotel. Optional last-minute shopping at markets or a relaxed walk along the seafront.

Dinner and overnight at a hotel in Libreville.
