The João Vieira e Poilão Marine National Park is a complex of four small islands in the south-east of the Bijagós archipelago covering an area of more than 490sq km.
Due to its geographic location João Vieira-Poilão National Park, Iles d’Orango National Park & Rio Cacheu Mangroves Natural Park are rich in biodiversity and relatively abundant natural resources.
More than four species of marine turtle breed on the islands and these include the Green Turtle, Loggerhead Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle, Hawksbill Turtle and Leatherback Turtle. The Ilhéu do Poilão is the most important nesting area for the green sea turtle in the eastern Atlantic.
